AI is changing how work gets done, but sometimes the conversation around it feels like a mix of hype, panic and too many buzzwords. So after our London event “Leading HR in an Era of AI, Agility and Global Disruption,” we wanted to take things in a more grounded direction.
To do that, our CEO Kristján Kristjánsson sat down with two brilliant voices in HR and recruitment, Perry Timms and Hung Lee, to talk about what leading with AI really looks like. No theory, no jargon, just the kind of conversations that get people thinking differently.
Below you can watch both interviews and read a few highlights from each.
If you’ve ever felt like AI sounds exciting but impossible to start using, this one’s for you. Perry and Kristján talk about why it’s perfectly fine to start small. Forget the big, world-changing projects. Instead, try adding AI to one small part of your day and see what happens.
They chat about how mapping your current workflows can help you spot those quick wins, how AI can take the repetitive parts of HR off your plate, and why documenting what people know can turn hidden expertise into shared knowledge across teams.
One of the best moments is when Perry compares work to a painting, saying that most of us focus on the whole canvas when really we should pay more attention to the brushstrokes. It’s a reminder that meaningful change usually starts with smaller, more focused actions.
In the second conversation, Kristján and Hung talk about something almost every HR professional can relate to: being too busy to even think about change.
Hung points out that most people are already using AI tools like ChatGPT, but very few have taken the next step into automation. The problem isn’t interest, it’s time. Kristján agrees and explains that the solution is to start with one process, fix it, and build from there.
They also talk about how sharing templates and examples helps HR teams learn faster from each other, rather than reinventing the wheel. Hung compares it to the early days of collaboration tools like Notion, where people learned more from each other than from the vendors themselves.
Their chat moves into the bigger picture too. What happens when AI takes care of the repetitive stuff? HR gets the space to focus on strategy, creativity and people. Kristján calls it the shift that could finally give HR the leadership seat it deserves.
Both Perry and Hung agree that AI isn’t about replacing people. It’s about giving people their time back. It’s about using tech to remove the tasks that drain energy and letting HR do more of the work that actually matters.
And maybe most importantly, it’s about learning through curiosity. Play with AI, experiment, share what works, and don’t worry about being perfect. That’s how progress happens.
At 50skills, we believe in helping organisations start small with AI too. You can build automated workflows, use best practice templates, or create something completely new. The goal is to make work simpler, not to add another layer of complexity.
