State of HR Automation - 2026 Report

The gap between wanting HR automation and actually running it

We surveyed 200 UK HR leaders on the state of automation. Most are using AI every week, yet their core processes are still manual. Here is what the data says, and how to close the gap.

The automation paradox

High hopes, mixed maturity

HR leaders know there is a better way to work. But the organisation around them is still stitched together from manual steps and disconnected tools. Almost everyone wants automation. Far fewer are running it.

The gap
01
Personal fluency, manual teams
Only 15% of teams work in environments where HR workflows are largely automated.
02
Friction never stops
97% hit errors or delays at least monthly. For 49% it is weekly or daily.
03
The anxiety underneath
Compliance risk and data quality are the brakes, even when the will is there.

AI is personal. Automation isn't organisational.

71% of HR professionals reach for AI daily or weekly. That fluency stops at the edge of their own desk. Ask about the company, and 67% say automation is used only "somewhat", on a handful of workflows.
  • 41% use AI daily, another 30% use it weekly
  • 67% automate only "somewhat", across a few workflows
  • Even among daily AI users, only 15% are largely automated

Manual work quietly costs you errors, time and stress.

The friction is not a one-off. The admin load lands hardest on the people carrying it: over 52% of HR professionals spending 10 or more hours a week on admin report frequent stress.
  • 97% experience manual errors or delays at
least monthly
  • 48.3% say their workload contributes to stress frequently
  • Past 20 hours of admin a week, constant stress climbs to 11.1%

More tools, more problems.

Point solutions pile up to fix specific gaps, then quietly create a bigger one. Move from a tidy 3 to 4 tools up to 5 or 6, and the share of teams hitting weekly errors more than doubles.

The cost shows up as integration headaches, data silos and manual reconciliation.
Where the time goes

The work that swallows the week

One bar, the whole week. These are the activities HR teams told us eat the most time, and every one runs on repetitive tasks and cross-system coordination. Exactly the work automation takes off your plate.

And it does not stay inside HR. 51% of teams say slow or inefficient processes affect the wider organisation, with another 36% saying it hits multiple teams. Delayed hiring, payroll slips and compliance risk all flow downstream from HR admin.
What's holding teams back

The blockers between intent and impact

77% plan to prioritise automation in the next 12 months. So what stops them? Teams piloting automated workflows ranked their barriers.

The pattern is telling: the teams moving fastest on AI are the most worried about compliance, and equally challenged by the unglamorous work of getting their data in order first.
The upside

Give HR its time back, and watch where it goes
